This 1969 Porsche 911 S boasts a rich racing heritage, having been converted into a race car in the early 1990s by renowned American driver Monte Shelton. Known for his extensive racing career spanning nearly 40 years, Shelton competed in over 130 races on iconic North American circuits. Notably, he participated in events with McLaren and Lola in the CanAm series during the 1970s, but his most significant achievements came with Porsche models, including the 906, 911 Carrera RSR, 934/5, and 935. With around 20 career victories and appearances in prestigious races like the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen, Shelton’s legacy is deeply intertwined with Porsche’s racing history.

In the early ’90s, Shelton shifted his focus to historic racing events and prepared this 911 2.0 S for SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) competitions. Modifications included the installation of a roll cage, bucket seats, an ATL competition fuel tank, and lighter doors. The engine, rebuilt by renowned expert Dick Elverude, displaces 1,991cc and the correct factory mechanical Bosch fuel injection and produces an estimated 225bhp, more than enough to propel this relatively light car at impressive speeds. The original 901 type gearbox has been uprated to the tougher 915 type, fitted with close ratio gears and steel synchro rings plus ZF limited slip differential.

The Porsche 911, first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963, quickly captivated automotive enthusiasts worldwide. Originally named the Porsche 901, it was rebranded as the 911 following a trademark dispute with Peugeot. The 911 gained a reputation for its challenging handling, leading to the Series B model revisions in 1968, which included a longer wheelbase and lighter engine ancillaries for improved weight distribution.

This vehicle was previously featured at auction via Bonhams|Cars where it fell just short of its reserve. That reserve has since been lowered for this online auction.  The vehicle has been extensively modified for competitive racing. It retains little of its original Irish Green specification but has been prepared to a high standard for competition. Returning it to stock configuration is possible but racing it would be far easier and more rewarding.

This Porsche held significance for Monte Shelton, symbolizing his transition to historic racing. So much so, it was the only car to sat alongside him in his obituary photograph. It represents his passion for motorsport and his enduring legacy in the racing community.

Exterior

The original green paint is visible in some areas, though the car now sports a white finish with Martini livery. Safety features include glass retainers, Perspex rear quarter glass, retaining pins for the bonnet and engine lid, and additional cooling holes in the rear panel. The car retains some original trim, and the overall fit and finish are commendable.

Interior

The interior is focused on competition, featuring an OMP suede-rimmed steering wheel, simplified vinyl door cards, and a substantial roll cage. The dashboard includes a large tachometer with a 10,000 rpm sweep and an adjustable shift light set around 7,000 rpm. Additional features include dual fuel pumps, a master ignition cut-off, an MSD ignition box, and an ATL Laboratories fuel cell in the front trunk.

Mechanical

This 911 S has been significantly upgraded mechanically, with highlights including a 225 horsepower engine with mechanical injection, original Fuchs wheels, 930 Turbo brakes, and a 915 gearbox with shorter ratios.

History Highlights

While paperwork is limited, the car includes a Porsche Cars North America certificate of authenticity, confirming its 1969 manufacture in Irish Green, with a type 901 transmission and engine number 6390166 901.10. The car also comes with a title from Oregon, where Shelton resided and ran his car dealership, Monte’s Motors. Additional documentation includes an SCCA vehicle logbook and a similar document from the Porsche Club of America dated 1997.
